blue bird gap farm

yesterday we spent the day at a farm for a friend's birthday.  it was a beautiful day even though it was a little too warm for my tastes.  we got to see a lot of animals and feed them, and when cohen pet the horse he said 'omg i'm petting a horse, this is real life' haha.

first real haircut

coco will be six years old next sunday.  everyday i'm seeing him transform into official big boy status, it's so exciting but really saddening at the same time.  so coco is famous for his long locks, it's kind of his thing, but yesterday when we went to get a trim he decided that he wanted to cut it a lot.  when he was four he told us that he didn't want to cut his hair because it was "my body, my choice" so we didn't protest, so i couldn't protest this time {i kind of wanted to}.  i took him to see belinda, who always does my hair because she's super amazing.  here's his first real haircut!

he was so amazing, he sat perfectly still and didn't complain at all.  this is his new haircut. my brother said to me "you watch too much boardwalk empire" haha probably.

i wish i was enjoying the alps too

i finally got to enjoy my first pumpkin latte of the season.  it definitely didn't disappoint, the only thing that was missing was me in a scarf and leather jacket.
while i was running my errands, dan was on the austrian border in the alps.  how jealous am i? is it bad that i secretly get a little mad when someone does something fun without me? ;)

a little bit of whining

not having a place to call your own is frustrating.  especially when you're so used to it, i know that i'm not homeless and we are not going without.  i know that this is small compared to if we didn't have a home for incredibly sad reasons, with no silverlining in sight.  it's still strange to me.  i'm used to waking up in my own home, starting my routine for the day.  cleaning my kitchen counters, doing makeup in my own bathroom, not have to worry about inconveniencing anyone, grabbing our clothing for the day from our dresser and not a suitcase.  all of those things are things that i've taken for granted.

i am so lucky that i have amazing family that is letting coco and all of my cats call their places home for now,  and i'm so grateful that i'm getting more time with loved ones before i'm across the world for a few years, but still.  especially now that fall is creeping around the corner i feel like i should be cleaning with the windows open, burning my new fall scents and decorating for my favourite season.  i feel like i'm missing out.  cohen is doing great, i know he'll be so excited when we're settled but he's also loving all of the traveling we are doing and the nonstop play.

i don't know, i just miss routine and i miss our life as a little family.  only a month and a couple of weeks until everything is back on track again {i hope}.  tomorrow dan begins the house search.  i hope our new home is more german and less american.

ps. is anyone else super stoked on sons of anarchy coming on in a few minutes? can't wait!

three states in one day

today the mister and i took a drive over the chesapeake bay bridge, through the eastern shore, up through delaware, and all the way to maryland so i could take him to the airport.  the weather was just as beautiful as the scenery.  i've never seen so many fruit and veggie stands in my life, i wanted to go to every one.  we stopped for lunch right on the bay {seriously amazing crab cakes} and took a little bit of time to enjoy the water.

on the way i called my sister for a quick chat and she asked me about all of the horrible weather, tornados and all.  i was like, what its perfect out.  fifteen minutes later we found the weather, when we were on the bay bridge! its like tallest bridge i've ever seen over water, and it feels like the guard rails are too short. the wind was blowing us everywhere and we could barely see a thing.  i did manage to see a water spout, it was ginormous and was pretty close to us.  i felt like helen hunt and he was my bill paxton, playing storm chasers.

we finally arrived at the hotel, which i love.  everything is really modern and this hotel is incredibly eco friendly which is super important to me.  i'm totally dreading the ride home tomorrow though, but hopefully i can make a quick pit stop by the church up here if i leave early enough.  everyone send positive thoughts and prayers that he has a safe, smooth flight to bavaria and settles in nicely asap!

the first ever ice cream cone

i've always wanted to travel the country and eat at all of the places featured on diners drive-ins and dives.  it's definitely an idea of how to spend our retirement.  today i got to eat at one of the places featured... doumars.  doumars has the original first ever ice cream cone maker. this guy invented the ice cream cone!  it's a really cute place and a norfolk favourite and the servers come to your car to take your order and they even memorize the whole thing.  it's definitely an important piece of food history, you can read more about it here.  if you're ever down here, its a must!

first day of school

today was the first day of school here, but not for us because we homeschool and since we are currently displaced we are delaying it a couple of weeks.  it was like a ghost town around here, the roads were pretty empty as well as all of the restuarants and stores that we stopped in.  thats the one thing i hate about summer, its a battle to get anywhere and do anything!

we decided to spend the afternoon go-karting and it was so much fun and we didn't have to wait in any lines at all which ruled.  cohen is 49'' so he was able to get the adult wrist band and ride the adult karts. huge mistake, i've never been so terrified in my life! he's not exactly coordinated for racing and was doing so many spins and running into sides i don't know how i don't have a full head of gray.  he had a blast though, he loved it.  after that we downgraded him to the kiddie pass where he rode less scary {for me} go karts.  his face was priceless.
of course no day would be complete without a trip to my favourite froyo place, the skinny dip. mmm
i hope everyone's first day of school went awesome!

we've officially handed over the keys to our house!  we are in the middle of headed south, but we stopped in fredericksburg to visit with my sister and my niece and nephew.  on the way our battery died , but yay to aaa for bringing one out to us asap.  we spend most of our day visiting some civil war battlefields and just relaxing.  i hope everyone has a sweet labor day weekend!
